Whitmer Uses Last State of the State to Steal Republican Ideas, Make Empty Promises
Lansing, MI – After eight years of broken promises, Governor Gretchen Whitmer delivered her final State of the State address, and finally spent some time in her home state to make more promises that she will not keep – while taking credit for Republican ideas.
Whitmer touted the House Republican roads plan as her own victory. After years of promising to fix the roads, Speaker Matt Hall and Lansing Republicans did what she could not, but that did not stop her from trying to take credit for their success.
Whitmer also decided to try co-opt the Republican effort for property tax reform. The problem? The governor’s plan picks winners and losers. Some Michiganders would get much-needed relief in Gretchen Whitmer’s increasingly unaffordable Michigan, while others are told to kick rocks. By contrast, the Republican plan introduced by Speaker Hall has tax relief for everyone.
Despite her agenda causing test scores to crater and literacy rates to drop through the floor, the governor, at the 12th hour, is trying to spend millions more dollars on her failed programs. Less than 40% of Michigan kids can read proficiently, and she continues to take zero responsibility for failing millions of students.
Of course, the governor’s speech tonight only means so much. As she has proven time and time again, she’s willing to stand on a stage and promise a moderate agenda while quietly funding her activist allies and the pet projects of her lobbyist friends.
As the people of Michigan saw in 2023, and as people around the country are seeing right now with the leadership of Governor Abigail Spanberger in Virginia, Democrats may walk and talk like moderates, but they govern like Marxists.
Regardless of what Governor Whitmer said tonight, it will be up to Republican leadership in Lansing to work on an agenda that actually makes Michigan a safer and more affordable place to live.
“Frankly, it doesn’t matter what a lame duck and disingenuous governor has to say,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “Gretchen Whitmer and Democrats across the country have shown us their true colors. They don’t care about affordability, jobs, energy prices, or the literacy crisis. For almost eight years, Gretchen Whitmer has said one thing and done another, and Michiganders look forward to next year when there is a State of the State worth listening to.”
