‘I’d Like to Talk to the Manager’: House Oversight Blasts Failed Leadership of Whitmer-Backed MDOC Director

Lansing, MI – In a shocking hearing held by the Michigan House Oversight Committee today, the conditions in Huron Women’s Correctional Facility were scrutinized by both Republicans and Democrats.

State Representative Laurie Pohutsky testified that she’d seen an inmate with mold growing out of both ears:

There were also reports of black mold growing in the showers:

Representative Josh Schriver went on to criticize the Governor Gretchen Whitmer-backed Michigan Department of Corrections Director (MDOC), Heidi Washington, and question how the MDOC is spending its more than $2 billion budget:

Gretchen Whitmer has previously stated that she has “full faith” in Director Washington, and Representative Jason Woolford questioned the governor’s support of the director more directly:

“This is not the first example we’ve seen of Gretchen Whitmer’s leadership team failing,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “Time and again, the governor has put her faith in the wrong person, and real people are paying the price. From State Police leader Lt. Colonel James Grady, to MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel, and now the Director of the MDOC, Whitmer is standing idly by as her department heads wreak havoc on the people of Michigan.”
