House Hears Testimony on Citizen Voter Registration Bill

Lansing, MI – Today, the House Election Integrity Committee held testimony on state Representative Jason Woolford’s bill, HB 4765, to require proof of citizenship to register to vote.

Notably, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson admitted last year that at least 15 non-citizens voted in the 2024 election, including a Chinese national who later fled the United States. Benson released this review after she testified before Congress, saying “there’s no evidence that non-citizens are voting.”

Democrat-backed changes to the Michigan Constitution in 2022 allowed people to use an affidavit of identity rather than an I.D. to vote. Last year, House Republicans brought a resolution to the floor to require voter I.D., but every Democrat in attendance voted against it, and the resolution failed 58-48.

“As Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson has not done her job securing our elections,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “Now, House Republicans are trying to make up for her failures, but, time and again, Lansing Democrats are standing in their way.”
