Rep. Skaggs Contemplates Jumping Ship, Abandoning House Dem Majority Effort

Lansing, MI - This morning State Representative Phil Skaggs announced he’s reading the writing on the wall and considering abandoning ship.

Skaggs, who was tasked with leading the House Democrat campaign effort for 2026, is contemplating abandoning his caucus to run for a safer seat in the State Senate. This comes just months after frontline Democrat Representative Matt Koleszar announced he was leaving the House to run for the State Senate in Southeast Michigan.

“Nothing screams confidence in a House Majority effort quite like the captain jumping ship before it leaves the harbor. One by one House Democrats are reading the writing on the wall and realizing they enter 2026 with an uphill climb. Michiganders want change in Lansing - they want bold conservative leadership that will cut government waste, lower costs, bring jobs back to Michigan, and fix our broken education system,” said Zach Rudat, Spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network.

House Democrats face a bleak majority prospect heading into the 2026 cycle. In addition to defending 6 incumbent Democrats in Trump-won districts, they’d have to flip 4 more to regain a majority.
