Lansing Missing Low-Cost Solution to Save Taxpayers Millions
Lansing, MI - Did you know SNAP fraud increased by a staggering 400% since 2023?
Fraud in the government assistance program is on the rise as SNAP cards become easier to illegally replicate. But a low-cost solution could rein in abuse of the SNAP program, saving taxpayers millions of dollars that can be invested in our roads, our classrooms, and the SNAP recipients who need it the most.
Michigan taxpayers lost $14 million to SNAP fraud last year alone. Switching from magnetic swipe cards to chipped cards for SNAP would only cost Michigan taxpayers $8 million, a notably lower price tag than the fraudulent status quo.
“Government spending in Lansing has increased 43% since Governor Whitmer took office, because fraudulent spending like this slips through the cracks throughout the state bureaucracy. Lansing should pursue low-cost solutions to rein in fraudulent spending, to ensure taxpayers see a greater return on investment with their tax dollars,” said Zach Rudat, Spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network.
