MFN Statement on Scrapped Mundy Township Megasite

Lansing, MI - Today, we received the umpteenth case study on why government shouldn’t use tax dollars to pick winners and losers in a free market economy.

This morning it was announced that Sandisk, a semiconductor company based in California, will be abandoning its plans to build a factory in Mundy Township just south of Flint. This comes after nearly $260,000,000 tax dollars were already committed to site development, $139,000,000 of which has already been spent.

“On Governor Whitmer’s watch, our unemployment rate is one of the worst in the nation. If Governor Whitmer truly wants to do everything in her power to grow our economy in her final years of office, she should work with Republicans to cut taxes, cut red tape, fix our roads, and build a business climate that works for everyone, not just a handful of well-connected out-of-state corporations,” said Zach Rudat, Spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network.

A recent study confirmed just how unsuccessful Michigan’s corporate welfare scheme has been. Over the past 20 years, only 1 in 11 jobs promised have ever come to fruition.
