Lansing Dems Scrapped Reforms at the Heart of ‘Mississippi Miracle’
Lansing, MI - When it comes to public education, Mississippi used to be the laughingstock of the nation. But leaders in the Magnolia State have turned things around, becoming a top 20 state using policies scrapped by Lansing Democrats.
At the heart of Mississippi’s turnaround wasn’t dollars: it was accountability. Mississippi has adopted higher 3rd-grade reading standards and school system grades, practices that were also adopted in Michigan under Governor Snyder but later repealed under Whitmer’s Democrat trifecta.
“Over the past decade, Mississippi has evolved from an education laughingstock to a model for success. They did so with Michigan’s old playbook, using reforms that Democrats scrapped and dollars can’t buy: accountability, transparency, and higher standards. It’s far past time to restore our 3rd-grade reading law, restore our A-F rating system, and deliver a higher return on investment for Michigan families,” said Zach Rudat, Spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network.
Despite a 60.2% increase in per-pupil education funding in Michigan over the past decade, the 9th largest increase in the nation, Michigan’s 4th-grade reading scores rank 44th in the nation, with the fifth highest reading learning loss rates compared to pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels.
