ICYMI: Michigan Energy Hikes Among Highest in Nation

Lansing, MI – Over the weekend, The Detroit News published a comprehensive report on Michigan’s skyrocketing energy costs. Here are just some of the highlights:

  • Over the last 20 years, Michigan’s energy rates have increased faster than 46 other states’.

  • Homeowners today are expected to pay $850 more per year than in 2006.

  • Over the last five years, Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Public Service Commission (MPSC) has approved $1 billion in electricity rate hikes alone.

Of course, many Michiganders already know their rates have been jumping. They see it in their bills each month, and they feel it in their wallets. But non-stop price hikes still leave a lot of people wondering: Why?

For starters, in 2023, Gretchen Whitmer used the newfound power of her Democrat trifecta in Lansing to push through her Green New Deal, and it’s estimated to cost nearly $400 billion. On top of that, Whitmer’s handpicked MPSC commissioners continue to approve rate hike after rate hike. Every 12 months, utility companies are allowed to apply for new rate hikes, and every 12 months, Whitmer’s commissioners approve them.

“Gretchen Whitmer and her activist allies own Michigan’s energy crisis,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “Her policies, her allies, and her commissioners are forcing energy prices out of control, and Michiganders end up shouldering the costs.”
