House Dems Embrace “Hug-a-Thug” Agenda

Lansing, MI - As House Republicans fight to keep our communities safe, House Democrats are embracing a hug-a-thug agenda.

In April, Michigan’s Activist State Supreme Court deemed life without parole sentences for 19 and 20-year-old murderers was a “cruel and unusual” punishment, mandating that over 580 convicts be resentenced in 180 days. In response to the court ruling, House Republicans have a plan that enacts tougher sentencing guidelines, closes loopholes, and supports prosecutors stuck in the crosshairs.

But last week, House Democrats voted against the package on a party-line vote, delaying passage of the plan and endangering the very communities they serve.

“While House Republicans are fighting to keep convicted murderers off our streets, House Democrats are embracing a hug-a-thug agenda at the expense of our safety. The sad irony is that it’s our urban communities, the exact communities many Democrats represent, who will bear the biggest brunt of this backwards agenda. It’s far past time for Lansing Democrats to put the best interests of their communities first and work with Republicans to keep murderers off our streets,” said Zach Rudat, Spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network.

Of the over 580 convicted murderers who will be resentenced as a result of this activist court ruling, nearly half were sentenced in Wayne County alone. Almost 80% were sentenced in blue counties won by Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.
