Will Benson’s Broken Campaign Website Still Hinder Transparency?

Lansing, MI - Michigan is routinely rated one of the least transparent states in the nation. And while Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson runs for Governor, promising to make state government more efficient and transparent, she's failing to practice what she preaches.

This year, Benson launched a broken campaign finance website, hindering transparency on who’s funding our elected officials and how big the campaign checks are. Benson’s personal financial disclosure website was also on the fritz earlier this year, prompting rare bipartisan consensus on a legislative fix.

On Friday, candidates for state office will be submitting their latest round of campaign finance reports, and Michigan taxpayers are eagerly waiting to see if Benson follows through on her promise to fix her broken campaign finance website, or if her inaction further impedes transparency in Michigan.

“There’s no greater insult to taxpayers than paying for incompetence. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is campaigning on making government more transparent and efficient, but her own failures are hindering transparency in one of the least transparent states in the nation. Friday’s reports will quickly reveal if Benson upped her game, or if she is still failing to deliver on her promise,” said Zach Rudat, Spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network.
