Whitmer’s Budget: Billions of Dollars More to Accomplish Nothing

Lansing, MI – Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer presented her, thankfully, final Executive Budget Recommendation. After seven years of bloated, reckless, and ridiculous budget recommendations, it’s surprising that the governor still finds a way to exceed expectations for her fiscal irresponsibility.

This recommendation comes in at a whopping $88.1 billion, a $5 billion increase from her last recommendation, and an almost $30 billion increase from the first budget she signed. After all this time, Gretchen Whitmer has failed to learn a thing about responsible spending.

Where does the governor find all this extra money? New taxes, of course. Her budget includes at least half a dozen new taxes or tax increases, on everything from advertising to sports betting. But, even with all those new taxes, Gretchen Whitmer’s financial demands couldn’t be satisfied. Her plan also raids the Rainy Day Fund to backfill the remaining missing money.

Surely, though, the governor will at least be spending on worthwhile programs, right? It’s not as though Gretchen Whitmer has a reputation for wasteful government spending. Here are just a few of the ways she wants to waste these billions and billions of dollars:

  • Hundreds of millions in corporate welfare.

  • Millions for arts and culture grants.

  • Even more money for her failing, far-left education agenda.

Instead of focusing on tax relief, the governor wants to raise taxes. Instead of supporting small businesses, the governor wants to give more money to Michigan’s biggest corporations. Instead of helping Michiganders face the affordability crisis head-on, the governor wants to spend their money on her activist allies’ pet projects.

The governor’s solution to revenue shortfalls is to increase the budget by nearly 10%. The arsonist is back before the Legislature, asking for more money to put out the fires she lit.

“After seven years of bad budgets, our expectations could not have been lower,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “Still, Gretchen Whitmer managed to disappoint us. She is either wholly unaware of the problems Michigan families are facing, or she simply doesn’t care.”
