The Worst Governor in America Coming to Michigan

Lansing, MI – This weekend, California Governor Gavin Newsom will be visiting Michigan to campaign with Michigan Democrats. As an example to governors across the country, Newsom has made it his mission to show them how not to run a state. Sadly, Michigan’s own Governor Gretchen Whitmer has followed much of his example, spelling disaster for both states.

After a bold economic policy that consisted only of raising taxes to try and bribe companies to move jobs to their states, Michigan and California have both fallen to the bottom of the barrel when it comes to unemployment, ranked 44th and 50th, respectively.

The story is no better when it comes to literacy. Both states rank abysmally, with Michigan coming in at 44th and California at 39th in 4th-grade reading. Democrats’ longstanding policy of simply giving unions whatever they want without any regard to what students need seems to be failing in both states.

Both states have also chosen to follow the “Green New Scam” path. Whitmer passed her landmark energy package in 2023, and prices have already begun to skyrocket, making Michigan one of the least affordable states in the country. Prices are expected to go up $2,700 a year.

In California, gas now costs $5.60 a gallon – by far the most expensive in the country – as a result of Newsom’s push for green policies.

There is also the issue of waste and fraud in state government. When Speaker of the Michigan House Matt Hall took over in 2025, House Republicans were able to find thousands of ghost jobs in the Michigan budget.

Not to be outdone, Newsom has spent his time as governor continuing California’s train to nowhere, spending billions of dollars on high-speed rail that has yet to move a single passenger.

In two Democrat-run states, the story looks eerily similar: struggling economies, struggling students, and a state government full of waste, fraud, and abuse.

Now, Democrats are bringing Newsom in to show them how it’s done, in an effort to destroy Michigan even more. Sarah Pounds and Alex Hawkins, two Democrat nominees for the state House, are looking to California for the playbook.

“Gavin Newsom and Gretchen Whitmer are both governors who have watched their states decline, and their policies have only made things worse,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “Whitmer deserves a little credit, though, because at least our state’s streets aren’t covered in human feces like Gavin Newsom’s California.”
