The Money Behind Michiganders for Money Out of Politics

Lansing, MI – The Michiganders for Money Out of Politics (MMOP) ballot drive claims to be an effort to get money out of Michigan politics, but in reality, the organization is driven by the dark money it claims to oppose.

New reporting shows that MMOP has taken significant amounts of money from the California-based Tides Foundation, which is a far-left activist group that funds progressive causes. Not only that, but their entire effort is being driven by a coalition of left-wing groups that are trying to rewrite the rules in favor of Democrats.

Also among their financial backers is Jane Fonda, an anti-American climate activist:

The Tides Foundation and Hanoi Jane are not the only far-left supporters of this dishonest ballot initiative, though. They are also receiving money from other dark money organizations across the country, including:

  • $250,000 from Working Families, Inc. (New York)

  • $200,000 from the All Hands on Deck Network, Inc. (Massachusetts)

  • $100,000 from the Movement Voter Project (Massachusetts)

  • $100,000 from the Green Advocacy Project (Washington, D.C.)

  • $100,000 from the Pro-Democracy Campaign (Massachusetts)

  • And a number of other far-left, dark money groups.

To make matters worse, this group is not even honest about what their ballot petition does. They say it is about getting money out of politics, but many Democrat allies, like unions, get exemptions under their rules:

“The MMOP ballot initiative is a dirty trick from top to bottom,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “A coalition of leftist dark money organizations is trying to buy its way onto the ballot while pretending to oppose money in politics. It has never been about fairness – it’s about rewriting the rules to favor their progressive allies. Michiganders should decline to sign.”
