Michigan Continues to Underperform in Jobs, Labor Participation

Lansing, MI – Michigan’s latest unemployment numbers are in, and, despite what Governor Gretchen Whitmer might say, things are getting worse, not better.

While unemployment did drop by 0.1%, so did Michigan’s workforce participation. That means that an increasing number of people in Michigan are no longer looking for jobs. Both Michigan’s unemployment rate and Michigan’s labor participation rate remain worse than the national average.

In fact, despite the small drop in unemployment, Michigan remains in the bottom five states in the nation, along with New Jersey, Oregon, California, and New Mexico – other Democrat-run states.

“Gretchen Whitmer and her allies might try to spin these numbers as a win, but Michigan continues to underperform the rest of the country,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “Michigan Republicans are serious about improving affordability, cutting burdensome regulations, and getting people back to work, while Lansing Democrats are content to let Michigan fall behind.”
