ICYMI: WSJ Blasts Whitmer for Refusing to Call a Special Election in the 35th
Lansing, Mich. – The national media is turning its eyes to the 270,000 residents in Michigan with no representation. The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board slammed Governor Gretchen Whitmer for leaving the Great Lakes Bay Region without a voice in the State Senate. They point out that the reason comes down to politics, not people:
“[...] Ms. Whitmer might spend the rest of her days in office with a GOP majority in the state House, 58-52, and an evenly divided Senate [...]”
The WSJ also noted that it is not just Republicans who are crying foul – some Democrats are not happy either. Saginaw County Democratic Party Chair Brandell Adams was quoted as saying, “We’re being taxed, but we have no representation in the state Senate.”
It has now been more than 230 days since Kristen McDonald-Rivet abandoned her seat in the 35th to move up to Congress, with Governor Whitmer offering no clues as to when, or even if, a special election might be called.
WSJ’s piece concludes with a sharp message for Whitmer and Michigan Democrats as they continue to play politics with the 35th Senate District’s representation:
“The longer Ms. Whitmer disrespects the 35th District, the more voters may wonder why they’d support the party of a governor who doesn’t trust their judgment.”
