ICYMI: Rylee Linting Calls out Senate Dems for Holding Up Public Safety Bills

This week, state Representative Rylee Linting penned an op-ed in The Detroit News to highlight her public safety bill package that is currently being held up in the Democrat-led Michigan Senate. The bills would increase the penalties for people who run from the police. She starts by laying out how the problem has grown in Michigan:

In my district, the Wyandotte Police Department faces dozens of high-speed chases each year. But this is not just a Metro Detroit problem. Over five years, crashes involving a fleeing criminal jumped by nearly 50% statewide, and deaths in those cases have more than doubled.”

Her bipartisan legislation would hold those who run from the police accountable:

“That’s why I introduced legislation to crack down on fleeing and eluding. Working with my local police department and the House Judiciary Committee, we found a solution that will keep Michiganians safe and create stiffer penalties for those putting our communities in danger.”

Linting goes on to lay out why the problem has not been addressed:

“Lately in Lansing, good policy is often taking a back seat to political games. From tipped wages, to licenses for 8,000 Michigan doctors, and now, public safety, it’s become clear that nothing will reach the governor’s desk unless it can be spun as a win for Senate Democrats.”
