ICYMI: Sen. Webber Lays Out a Plan to Make Healthcare More Affordable

Lansing, MI – Yesterday, state Senator Michael Webber penned an op-ed for The Detroit Newsdetailing his legislation to make healthcare in Michigan more affordable. He begins by laying out the problem with state mandates:

“Looking across the country, it seems clear that extra state mandates have contributed to higher insurance costs. Maryland previously established a Health Care Commission to review the impact of its insurance requirements. The commission’s 2019 report found that state insurance mandates contributed to 14% of premium costs in the commercial market and 12% of costs in the individual market.”

As legislators in Lansing weigh additional mandates for Michigan, Webber’s legislation would create a task force to examine the cost of how they could affect Michiganders. He also wrote about the costs of the plan released by Senate Democrats:

Senate Democrats in Michigan have authored legislation to create a state-run health reinsurance program. Estimates of the cost of this program range from $71 million to $232 million each year, according to the nonpartisan Senate Fiscal Agency and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Department of Insurance and Financial Services.
