State Board of Education Opposes Empowering Students

Lansing, MI – The Michigan State Board of Education is considering a resolution to oppose a federal tax credit that could provide an additional $1 billion in donated funds to support Michigan's K-12 students.

Too many members of this State Board of Education have spent their time being activists for things that do not support students, like "gender identity politics" and other social topics. They have never voiced their support for proven tactics that will address the growing literacy crisis or academic achievement crisis facing Michigan students. Their legitimacy has been devastated by their own inability to remain focused on the issues that matter.

Michigan is ranked 44th in the nation for literacy. Last year, Michigan third-graders had their lowest English-language arts (ELA) scores on the M-STEP in the history of the test. Less than 40% fourth-graders are proficient in math.

The Board is part of the problem, so their considerations cannot be a part of the solution.

“The State Board of Education has failed on every level to prepare and educate Michigan students,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “This resolution should never make it back to the agenda, and if it does, the governor should ignore it entirely.”
