Michigan Senate Finally Passes Republican Bill to Save Doctors’ Licenses

Lansing, MI – With only four days to spare, the Democrat-led Michigan Senate finally passed a Republican bill to renew the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC) and save the licenses of more than 8,000 Michigan doctors.

The IMLC allows doctors from other states to come to Michigan and practice medicine without having to redo the entire licensing process, and thousands of physicians in Michigan currently practice under an IMLC license. The compact expired last year after the Michigan Senate refused to pass a bill extending it, putting all of those doctors in jeopardy.

After playing political games for more than a year, Democrat Senate Leader Winnie Brinks finally reached an agreement with Speaker Matt Hall to pass state Representative Rylee Linting’s bill and reinstate the IMLC.

After passing unanimously in the Senate, the bill now heads to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s desk where she is expected to sign it.

“This is a huge win for doctors and patients in Michigan,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “After months, Speaker Hall and Representative Linting were finally able to convince Winnie Brinks to stop playing political games with people’s healthcare.”
