Michigan Democrats Ratchet Up Anti-Police Rhetoric

Lansing, MI – Over the last month, Michigan Democrats have been increasingly aggressive on their anti-law enforcement stance, including calls to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and efforts to fire police officers who work with their federal partners.

On a recent podcast, Democrat state Representative Kristian Grant called to abolish ICE, and then continued to compare law enforcement to “slave patrols.” The day after that podcast was published, state Senator Darrin Camilleri took to the Michigan Senate floor to call ICE officers a “street gang” that was raising the homicide rate across the country.

Of course, the most interesting anti-police effort might have come from state Representative Mai Xiong, who attended the Detroit International Auto Show wearing a homemade dress that read “Defund ICE.” She made sure to bash law enforcement and complain about the luxurious event she was not forced to attend, in between sitting in the sports cars that were on display.

Unfortunately, the Democrat anti-police sentiment does not stop with rhetoric. Amidst increased threats to the lives of ICE agents, Lansing Democrats want to pass a package of bills to make their jobs harder and more unsafe.

On top of that, Democrats are intending to fire two Detroit Police Officers who worked with U.S. Border Patrol agents to have illegal immigrants detained. One of the suspects had a pending felony warrant.

“This ardent anti-police brand of Democrat politics has real consequences,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “Two police officers may lose their jobs because of these efforts, and even more might have their safety jeopardized. Are there any Democrats left who are willing to call out this dangerous and irresponsible position? Does Kevin Hertel agree with his colleague’s comments? Do Reggie Miller and Denise Mentzer also believe that law enforcement is based on slave patrols?”
