Lansing Democrats Continue Fighting for More Waste, Fraud, and Abuse

Lansing, MI – As the July 1 budget deadline comes and goes with no budget yet presented to the governor, it’s important to highlight what Lansing Democrats have spent months fighting for and the negative impact their budget will have on Michigan.

For starters, both Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks proposed robbing the state’s rainy-day fund by $400 million and $350 million, respectively. How do they justify dipping into the state’s emergency reserves? Well, Brinks has her eye on a $30 million aquarium in Grand Rapids, for starters:

The governor’s proposed budget is no better, sadly. Her final executive budget recommendation was a whopping 52% higher than the state budget in 2019, when she took office. Despite spending billions of dollars more than her predecessors, Whitmer has very little to show for it.

The cornerstone of her “economic development” plan was giving massive amounts of cash to big corporations so they would create jobs in Michigan. That plan failed spectacularly, with a new report estimating that only 3% of the jobs she promised were created. Now, during negotiations over the final budget she will sign as governor, Gretchen Whitmer has the gall to ask for even more money.

“Unsurprisingly, Gretchen Whitmer and Winnie Brinks are once again putting special interests over the interests of everyday Michiganders,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “As this budget fight drags on, it’s important for people to know that Republicans are fighting to make Michigan safer and more affordable, while Democrats are fighting for Lansing insiders.”
