ICYMI: The End of Western Civilization Begins at OU
Lansing, MI – Last week, a student at Oakland University wrote a shocking op-ed for The Midwesterner describing the university’s transition to DEI curriculum and how a far-left agenda has infiltrated OU’s programming.
Angelina Eleas writes:
OU’s faculty is moving to eliminate this requirement [Western Civilization Course] and replace it with a mandatory category called “Difference and Power.” The official proposal says that these courses must focus on “systemic forms of inequality and underlying structures of power, their history, and their disproportionate impact on different social groups.” Translated, this is DEI at a public university, a direct violation of federal policy. This would literally be the end of Western Civilization at OU.
Eleas goes on to describe how conservative students are hampered from hosting events, but the university sponsors events like anti-ICE trainings:
Earlier this month, the university hosted an anti-ICE training, encouraging students and community members to defy federal law. When conservative student groups want to host speakers, they encounter resistance at every turn — difficulties booking rooms, security fees, and administrative opposition.
Eleas finished the piece with a direct appeal to lawmakers in Michigan:
The Legislature has both the authority and the obligation to ask what is happening at OU. It is past time they did so. Otherwise, scholars of a not-so-distant future will ask, “Where did Western Civilization end?” and the answer leads them to Oakland University.
“Students deserve to have a fair education, and they shouldn’t be treated differently because of their political orientation,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “OU is the latest example of a public university using taxpayer dollars to malign conservative students, and it has to stop.”
