Detransitioners Take Democrats to Task Over Harmful Gender Ideology
Lansing, MI – This morning, the House Oversight subcommittee on Child Welfare took testimony from detransitioners – people who have undergone a medical gender transition and attempted to reverse the damage of the procedure. Republican members of the committee questioned why it has become the norm in Michigan to allow minors to undergo dangerous, life-altering gender transition treatments.
One woman testified that her gender transition treatments were administered without the knowledge of her parents and that her doctors took steps to keep them in the dark:
Until this year, both Corewell Health and the University of Michigan’s health network offered hormone therapy and puberty blockers to children. Both ended their programs after President Trump’s administration instituted stronger regulations to protect children and their developmental health, though attempting to medically alter a child’s gender remains legal in Michigan.
Earlier this year, House Republicans passed two bills to protect the fairness and integrity of girls’ sports, banning biological boys from competing in girls’ divisions. The Democrat-controlled Senate has yet to act on them.
“The testimony this morning was a stark reminder of the work we have left to do to protect kids in Michigan,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for the Michigan Forward Network.”It’s unacceptable that these procedures are still standard practice in Michigan, and it’s shocking that there are so-called ‘medical professionals’ who hide their use from parents.”
