Democrat Supreme Court Might Let Murderers Out of Prison

Lansing, MI  – Yesterday, the Democrat-led Michigan Supreme Court opened a path for convicted murderers who received sentences of life without parole to get paroled. In a 5-1 ruling, with the lone Republican on the Court, Justice Brian Zahra dissenting, the Court ruled that certain life without parole sentences were unconstitutional, saying they were “cruel and unusual punishment.”

This is not the first time the Democrat Court has chipped away at life without parole. For years, the liberal justices have gradually gotten softer on crime. Last year, the Court struck down hundreds of life without parole sentences for 19 and 20-year-olds convicted of murder. Earlier this year, the Court considered a ban on civil arrests taking place in a courthouse.

This latest decision could affect hundreds of murderers currently serving time. As the lone dissenter, Zahra said, “The majority is simply rewriting history to afford the defendant's relief for the same error that this Court plainly considered and long ago rejected.”

Sadly, the activist Michigan Supreme Court is not alone in its push to be soft-on-crime. Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit, who is the Democrat Party’s endorsed candidate for Attorney General, has also been criticized for his soft-on-crime record. When he was asked about his far-left policies in Washtenaw County, Savit tried to run from his own record.

“This Democrat-led Court is exactly the sort of activist judiciary that radical leftists like Eli Savit dream of,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “The Court has said it is preventing cruelty, but in reality, it is just ignoring the cruelty of murder by allowing convicted murderers to walk free.”
