MMOP Has Signatures Challenged Ahead of Deadline

Lansing, MI – Last week, Protect MI Free Speech filed a challenge to the signatures submitted by the dark money, anti-free speech ballot proposal Michiganders for Money Out of Politics (MMOP). In May, MMOP submitted more than 560,000 signatures to the Board of State Canvassers to get their rule-rigging proposal on the November ballot, but Protect MI Free Speech claims that many of those signatures are invalid.

In the sample of 1,000 signatures, Protect MI Free Speech claims that there are at least 148 duplicate signatures, signatures from unregistered voters, and even signatures from people who are dead.

MMOP came under fire earlier this year for accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in dark money donations, while at the same time purporting that the initiative’s purpose was to combat dark money in politics. The group was also caught lying about how the proposal works:

“MMOP has a history of dishonesty,” said Gabe Butzke, a spokesperson for Michigan Forward Network. “It would not come as a surprise if many of their signatures were found to be as false as the promises they’ve made to Michiganders.”
